Zenigata arrives on the ship "Machine Gun Kelly", a casino on the water owned by the mafia, because Lupin plans on stealing the casino's money. Lupin and his gang manages to break into the ship's vault but was unable to escape with the money due to Zenigata's shooting. However, there was another purpose the ship had, one that Lupin was aware of; to search for a sunken ship filled with gold. Lupin managed to steal this data while he was on the ship, however, now they have to contend with Zenigata, the mafia, and a secret organization whose base is under Alcatraz, as they attempt to uncover the secret behind the organization and the sunken treasure.

In Monkey Punch's 2001 TV special for the Lupin franchise, Lupin and the gang deal with the mafia and a secret society in uncovering the location of a sunken ship of gold bars near San Francisco's infamous Alcatraz Island. This particular special decides to have some fun twisting parts of American history in creating its plot as the secret society have big plans with Alcatraz and have their ties to some major events from the 1960s when Alcatraz closed down. Even some CIA agents get in on the action here as they try to cover up these secrets and kill off members of said secret society, making this quite the entertaining special alongside the standard antics you can expect of Lupin and his gang. I did notice the animation for this TV special is a bit below par in quality as there were scenes where animated details looked a bit rough with scenery and character designs, as well as the animation being noticeably subpar as I would have thought there would have been some effort put into it like recent TV specials like Rupan Sansei vs Meitantei Conan Special and The Last Job. Outside of my quibbles with the animation, Alcatraz Connection was still an entertaining Lupin III TV special that maintains the franchise's standard antics with its memorable cast and even gave me some giddiness with how it twisted events in American history. Definitely worth a look if you are a Lupin fan.
