Everyone gets invitations to Ataru's wedding, and Lum's not the bride! It seems that many years ago, Ataru played shadow tag with an alien girl named Elle. Unfortunately, Elle was another Alien Princess, and on her planet, if a boy steps on a girl's shadow, they have to be married. Now Elle is back and she wants to hold him to it. Even worse, Ataru seems ready to go through with it!

This was the first of several movies released for the Urusei Yatsura franchise and this appears to be an anime-only storyline that focuses on Lum and Ataru's relationship being at risk when another alien girl lays claim that our lecherous male lead had gotten engaged to her first. The movie is noticeably a bit more serious with its plot than the norm for what was seen from the TV anime and has somewhat better animation quality with more detail put into character designs. Still like many anime-only films of its ilk, Only You doesn't really add anything new to the series that you would expect from the series as things are back to the status quo with Ataru, Lum, and other characters at the end of the film; even with the teasing of a marriage ceremony being done for the main couple. As I currently own every American release of the franchise that came out, I suppose I will continue slogging through the remaining five movies to see if they are of any better quality than this one.

I'm not sure where this title falls exactly in the Urusei Yatsura franchise, but I watched the movie after seeing 50-episodes of the series which was a good place. If you are a fan of the series you will love this movie, but if you aren't a fan, it is still a fun ride.

Fans of the TV series will love how the movie writers attempted to get all of the players from the TV series at least cameo parts from Lum's alien girlfriends, the various class memebers, Cherry and Sakura-sensei, Lum's family, Ataru's family, and more. With such a giant cast, it really is difficult to do much, but the writers do a really good job of it.

Also, the writers manage to capture the very lecherous side of Ataru from early in the series as well as the Ataru from after episode 22 where he actually shows his feelings for Lum. So again, the writers deserve a lot of credit here.

As to the story itself, again, UY fans will love it. It manages to capture the fun of the TV series as well as the charm while leaving behind the ugly elements that made me dislike the first 21-episodes. Again, we have no doubts as to how much Lum loves Ataru, even if he is an unfaithful lech. And it is always nice to see Ataru show a little appreciation for Lum too.

Bottom line: the movie is done for fans of the series and as such is well done. Folks who haven't watched the series will not know who all the players are, but should enjoy the fun of the movie.

This is truly wonderful movie. First it carefully captures the spirit of the series. Second is the direction; there is this great scene where petals are falling from the sky and Elle's planet looks brilliant. The music fits the film perfectly, especially the musical interludes. Plus, the film manages to show most of the characters at the time and is the only UY film to really feature Kurama.

This is a wonderful gem of a movie. It perfectly captures the zany humor of the TV show, with just a touch of the rare sentiment that gives the characters' relationships depth. The whole gang is here, though some characters have little more than cameo appearances. As always in UY, the music is a highlight. Several familiar songs from the TV show underscore scenes in the movie. The climactic wedding sequence is a treat! Worth watching over and over.
