(All episodes watched--twice):

Those crazy, silly, loveable girls are back. Yuruyuri is a schoolgirl series which has a wacky yet clever and witty feel to it (if such a thing is possible). Humor, rather than fanservice, powers this show--it seems that more often than not, the priorities with schoolgirl comedies go the other way. The girls here aren't exploited for their bodies, so instead you can get to like them. There is the yuri (lesbian) undertone, but it is restrained and played for laughs without humiliating anyone (including the viewer). Episode one was great fun although the first half wouldn't make much sense unless you had viewed season one and was familiar with Akari's personality. The OP sequence is a major joke in itself. The show delivered several LOL jokes, like the parody of the typical magical girl TV series. If you enjoyed shows like Lucky Star, Hyakko or High School Girls, chances are that you will like this one, too. I doubt if everyone will like this show, but the fact that it got a second season in the first place tells you something about its popularity. No matter how the remainder of the Summer 2012 season works out, this series will be a winner for me.

Episode six, which begins with a parody of mahou shojo shows, was especially fun. Magical girl Mirakurun is a little rough around the edges ("I'll beat the crap out of bad kids who do naughty things!"). Also fun was episode 11, in which the girls stumble across a time machine (!) in the closet of the Tea Room. And then there's the parody of the fairy tale of Snow White in the final episode. This is a show whose makers put some writing talent into their work. In general, Yuruyuri S2 strikes me as a kind of 'dumb' humor done in a clever way, as a group of odd girls do odd things. They are not quite as bizarre or serious as the girls from Joshiraku, a similar series which is running concurrently. I don't laugh out loud continually during Yuruyuri, but it is silly, nonsensical in an amusing way, and was one of the shows I most looked forward to each week. I re-watched it in 2021.
