Shinryaku!? Ika Musume S2
(Three episodes watched):
Do I really want to commit myself to another season of Squid Girl? As much as I like the basic premise, it is just not all that funny. There are no LOL jokes, and I find myself feeling sorry for Ika more than laughing at her. I can’t help feeling, just as during season one, that such an outlandish premise is largely going to waste because not enough effort and talent has been devoted to it. Ika’s personality has hardly changed since the very first episode; she’s still deluded about ‘invading’ when it became clear long ago that that was out of the question. If this show was uproariously funny, I wouldn't care about things like character development, but since it isn't, I need some other reason to watch. It seems to me that this would be far more interesting if she was attempting to adapt to life among humans. The same sort of so-so jokes keep coming, leaving me repeatedly checking the timer on the DVD player in hopes that this will wrap up soon, since I know it isn’t going to get any better. This seems to be a hard show to make a decision regarding whether to watch it or not, since it lies right on the line between worth and not worth watching. After watching a second and third episode, I came back here to adjust my first impression, but it still seems perfectly accurate. That just goes to show how episodic this series is. I wish it would either get a little better or a little worse to make my choice about watching it easier. Ah, I think I can drop Squid Girl 2 without much chance that I will ever regret my choice.
