For those not familiar with the Fate franchise, this movie is based on another scenario from the Fate/stay night game called Unlimited Blade Works featuring more focus on Archer and Shiro's girl of choice being Rin this time around. Clearly, this movie is geared for fans of the series because it rushes through its plot developments for the arc's major scenes and seems to be assuming you are aware of what occurred during the first arc of the series, the Fate route. Characters who had their focus and depth during the TV adaptation of Fate/ Stay Night lack such depth in this movie considering Servants and their Masters not important to the advancement of the arc's plot are either quickly killed off or only appear in battle scenes. Being the central focus of UBW, Archer does make for an interesting character with his defiance of willingly serving others to accomplish his goals. But like the TV series, I couldn't really latch onto Rin and Shiro thanks to their character archetypes and it looked like the movie removed any trace of a romantic attraction between the two that they had in the game. The visuals to the movie are a definite improvement over the TV series featuring more fluid battle scenes and higher quality scenery and character designs. But still, Fate/ Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works should only be watched by those who have familiarity with the Fate franchise as you would otherwise be lost over what is going on as the movie provides limited explanation of the events, people and objects within the world of the franchise, compared to the TV series which would offer a better start to those being introduced to the Fate franchise.
