Mai Mai Miracle focuses on the everyday happenings of movie lead Shinko as she interacts with her friends and family in 1950s Japan, as well as having points where she imagines herself as a feudal era ancestor. The movie does a solid job balancing focus between lighter and serious moments as Shinko plays and interacts with others, with the anime's serious moments coming into play with some personal issues affecting a couple of her friends in the later half of the movie. Also, the children in the film behave believably in their age with Shinko's imagination usually getting the better of her at points and the issues affecting her friends believably causing them inner turmoil or grief due to their inexperience dealing with such issues. The film's visuals may remind viewers of Studio Ghibli's animation style with its soft pastel colors and clean details. While not the most visually impressive anime film, the animation style works well enough for the intended mood of Mai Mai Miracle and the animated settings are accurate in their depiction of 1950s rural Japan. Overall, Mai Mai Miracle made for a solid historical drama anime focusing on Shinko and her friends simply enjoying their childhood, while also facing some of their own personal issues.
