The Daicon opening animations were two animated shorts focused around a girl visited by two men on a spaceship who give her water to plant her daikon radish. While delivering this water, this girl has to fend off monsters and giant robots.

Daicon III - 5min (released in 1981)
Daicon IV - 6min (released in 1983)
Daicon Medley - 14min (released in 2004)

Daicon III and IV were made by amateur animators who were college students during the times both shorts were made. The animators would later form the animation studio known as Gainax as some of their well-known animated talent like Hideaki Anno and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto took part in the development of these shorts. Daicon III and IV premiered at the Japan Science Fiction Convention in 1981 and 1983 respectively.

These animated shorts helped improvise Gainax's reputation as being the animation studio made by fans for fans. These shorts were meant to showcase the animated talents of a group of college students and while the artwork is not much to look at nowadays in comparison to the latest titles coming out of Japan, the Daicon films are an important piece of anime history. Without them, Gainax wouldn't be around to make an impact on fans with titles like Evangelion and FLCL.

If you're a big fan of Gainax or into research on the history of anime, you should try finding these shorts online to get a look at a piece of important history in the world of anime.
