Based on a popular 2000s JRPG video game, Tales of the Abyss features the spoiled prince Luke von Fabre teaming up with several characters to combat an enemy threat that is attempting to trigger the destruction of all life on the planet Auldrant. Taking on medieval-fantasy based story elements, Tales of the Abyss does take on a number of the plot and character tropes you would typically find within an RPG. However, the series does offer enough meat to stick out from other video game-inspire titles as it does flesh out the motivations of much of its cast and a number of characters like Luke do get their own developments throughout the anime's 26-episode run. The anime also tosses in some twists to its plot developments that do make some sense as more about the elements of Abyss' world get revealed. The series does have some shortcomings in that it doesn't totally escape the flaws of video game-inspired adaptations like it with some underdeveloped characters and its final few episodes feeling rushed in their developments. But still, the series offers solid enough exploration of its world, plot, and characters where I could at least recommend checking it out at least once if you're a fan of the video game series or medieval-fantasy adventure anime.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1913#628]
(Two episodes watched):

Watching this show makes me feel like I really am playing a RPG, or, more accurately, watching somebody else play one (and we all know how exciting that is). The scenes seem like prepackaged experiences which were not designed to fit together into one skillful and intriguing plotline so much as to make a fair amount of sense no matter what their outcome is. It's like the events are designed to shoehorn the players into accepting the most obvious outcome--almost like the game is playing you. The characters' motivations seem poorly explained; they make hasty decisions which don't make a whole lot of sense (like a person we've barely met being adopted in our wandering group). Why is the warrior mage girl so dutifully escorting Luke home when she was fighting him not long ago? Another problem is that the show doesn't seem to know whether it should be serious or ridiculous. I agree with Luke, the sickeningly kawaii creature that tags along with them kinda pisses me off, too. I can't afford to watch every new series this fall, and I'm tempted to cut Tales of the Abyss from my schedule.

Indeed, I've cut this show from my viewing schedule. Perhaps if it were not up against such stiff competition as is present in the outstanding '08 fall season, I might watch it after all. But as is, I may not even bother to download the episodes for later viewing. Not terribly bad I would say, but not significantly good either.

a very pg-ish feel. i haven't played the game, but i already know where the plot is going and the "surprise twist" at the end just by watching the OP and ED.
