After a cataclysmic collision of the earth and a comet, the Kanto region of Japan is a post-apocalyptic living hell, where the strong prey upon the weak. The survivors endure a reign of terror under the "Slum Lord" and his barbaric underlings. The common people's only hope is the mysterious "Violence Jack", a hulking figure prone to horrifying acts of violence, but apparently only upon the Slum Lord's people. "The muscles of a gorilla! The fangs of a wolf! Eyes that burned with primordial fire! Wherever Jack goes, the scent of death fills the air behind him"...

Most of the Japanese name is a kana sound pattern: "バイオレンス" = "baiorensu", "ジャック" = "jakku", "ハーレム" = "haaremu", "ボンバー" = "bonba". "編" = "hen" ("book", "volume"). So the Japanese name is for the first OVA volume "Violence Jack: Harlem Bomber" from 1986; the 1988 OVA is "Violence Jack: Jigoku Gai" (Evil Town), the 1990 OVA is "Violence Jack: Hell's Wind hen".

The last title of Manga Entertainment's infamous "Holy Trinity of Suck" I seen, Violence Jack is basically a mindless romp of senseless violence, gore and enough depravity ranging from cannibalism, rape, sadomasochism and torture. Each episode of the OVA is just an excuse to feature depraved gangs committing atrocious acts on their victims and Jack stepping in to dispatch said gangs in enough gory ways. The original VHS release of the series got a good amount of censorship from the title's more graphic scenes and any violent/ sexual acts directed towards women and children. It's easily the worst title among the Trinity of Suck in terms of objectionable content. Unless you crave the depravity and graphic content offered with Violence Jack, don't waste your time on it.

A fansub group called Anime Classic Reviews has been re-releasing anime oldies that were once licensed but had slipped into unavailability, which intrigues me (another project is Dirty Pair TV. I've always been curious about the title "Violence Jack", but not quite curious enough to hunt it down. Now it has been made conveniently available, and I gladly downloaded it. I knew practically nothing about the premise; it quickly became clear that this would be a Road Warrior-like post apocalyptic tale. Perhaps my involuntary reactions to certain scenes could best describe the impression this show left me with:

Oh God!

That's what I said to myself when we see that Jack has ripped a man's head clean off. I was in a state of "laughing horror"--both horrified and amused at the lengths of violence this show was prepared to go to. Fortunately, the acts of violence are crudely animated and can't really be taken completely seriously.

God, this is INSANE!

Go Nagai may have some serious problems, judging from the way this show revels in scenes of S&M as we see what is liable to happen to the heroine Mari who has been kidnapped by the Harlem Bomber for training and sale as a sex slave. Mari's char design made me wonder if she was a Macross character who'd taken on a second job.

Holy S--t!

Jack keeps fighting as if nothing has happened after getting a forearm chopped off. This show takes great pains to depict the most bizarre, mutilating forms of combat possible. And talk about high blood pressure! At times fountains of blood would squirt from butchered characters. I'll bet Fist of the North Star was a lot like this.

Again, it's hard to take this stuff seriously and it is as much amusing as terrifying. Jack seems to be struck by lightning at the end, and I presumed it's curtains for him. This had been a fun show, but I was kind of relieved that it was apparently a one-timer, since the shock value was wearing off and I was ready to move on to something new. Except that with the benefit of some 'net research, this seems to be only the first of three OVAs. I'll gladly watch them all, I just need a breather.
