Naisho no Tsubomi explores some of the growing pains that fifth grader Tsubomi goes through such as her first period, learning the anatomical differences between boys and girls, her mother's pregnancy, and her first romance. The anime takes on a sensible and grounded approach in exploring these coming-of-age tribulations in its occasionally messy, occasionally awkward realizations that Tsubomi comes upon when experiencing them. The only questionable element to its exploration was the school showing its "birds and the bees" video for the kids to learn of their gender differences. Maybe it's the difference between Japan and America's school systems, but I recall learning of such things in middle school and not starting to feel the effects of puberty kick in until I got around sixth or seventh grade. Otherwise, the series can be a relatable one for preteens to watch as they experience the awkwardness of puberty and approaching adolescence.

What can I say ... this story is just so innocent, informative and sweet that I really can't say anything unkind about it.

And even when the main character, Tsubomi begins wondering about certain 'things', there is mysterious older school friend who happens to know the answers to all of her questions, and is willing to explain everything at a ten-year-old level. A effect that comes across as being just ordinary 'girl talk'.

Created to be an 'educational' story for 10-to-13 year-olds (or there abouts), it talks about sex issues in a down to earth way. I could easily see some parents choosing to pop this story into the DVD player, as opposed to having to sit down with their kids and actually talk to them about it. Well, hopefully it will open the door for such discussions between parents and their kids.

A great anime series, appropriate for both kids and parents alike.
