(Five episode watched):

When I saw the super cool Amu (complete with her school uniform modified into a Chou-Gal outfit) defend a small boy from being bullied, I experienced a sudden deja-vu for Chou-Gals! Kotobuki Ran. Having noticed that this was based on a Peach Pit production, I began to wonder if this might be a goofier take on that series, much like DearS was suspiciously similar to Chobits. Fortunately, before long it became clear that this show didn't have all that much in common with that one. One definite difference is Amu's hidden feelings of doubt about the false persona she projects. Actually, the silly SD sequences reminded me of yet another show, Kirarin Revolution. Another unexpected difference is the strange magical/supernatural element. Shugo Chara wasn't hilarious by any means, but was fairly amusing and left me with a smile on my face. It's too soon to say how clever the plot will be, but Amu seems likeable.

I must (or at least should) become more discriminating in which anime series I devote my limited supply of time to, and became tempted to shelve Shugo Chara. After five episodes I couldn't say that the theme of "charas" particularly intrigued me; in fact, I found the notion that depression, anger, and unhappiness are all the result of the mischief of naughty "X-Charas" to be rather juvenile. Shugo Chara seems like a show that was targetted at children, to reinforce Japan's hyper-competitive code of "doing your best". At least the jokes on the sidelines are fairly good. But I became frustrated by the lack of a sophisticated plot and gave up on this one. It must be indicative of how frustrated I felt that I didn't even save the episodes so that I could start watching them again some day--I almost always do that.

My favorite line: "Another weirdo. And what's with the cat ears?" --Amu
