An anime that felt like it was posturing to its audience, Ice is yet another post-apocalyptic anime where its gimmick is that that all men in the world have gone extinct due to a virus thus leaving the human population being nothing but women and banking on the hope of a mysterious technology called ICE to save humanity. While seeming like a unique premise on paper, Ice suffers from a rather barebones plot, being rather incoherent on the themes it wants to push with connecting sexuality and bonds, and paper-thin characters you won't give much of a hoot about. Also for an OVA series, Ice is rather underwhelming with its visuals as they seem like something done from a couple decades earlier in quality and animation shortcuts are oddly a regular sight throughout this series. The only high spot I could give Ice is its rather solid musical tracks done in an attempt to accompany the OVA's key scenes and while the sole lyrical track from AKB48 is okay, it suffers from a fair amount of repetition as it felt lazily tacked on at points to pad out the anime's run time. Overall, Ice is quite a mess for an anime as I got the impression that its creators had no clue what they wanted to do with it. Even if you're into anime, I wouldn't recommend tracking this one down.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1659#628]
(One episode watched):

As I watched the opening episode of ICE, the thought occured to me that what really matters here is whether I will wind up with enough answers (but not too many) to be intrigued, or will I just be frustrated? I think it was the latter result. I'm a third of the way through the OVA, yet I still have only a vague idea of what's going on here. I had assumed this would be a standard 23-minute episode, and found myself continually checking and rechecking the time track at the bottom of the screen to get an idea how long this would go on. Another problem is that I'm having a hard time taking this show seriously. During an action scene around halfway through, I couldn't help being more amused by the absurdity than thrilled by a sense of danger. What was the deal with those birds near the end, too? Be warned, this show can get pretty grisly (and kinky) at times. Hitomi Aida's character design reminded me of a certain character from Golden Boy; I spent most of the episode wondering what this present-day woman had to do with this post-apocalyptic world scenario, but a semi reasonable explanation finally turned up. The far-out technology and ornate interior decorations reminded me of Trinity Blood. I agree with Bitem e, the characters are very butch--at one point I was wondering if the Commander had really been voiced by a female VA. None of the characters have particularly endeared themselves to me so far. On the other hand, this series has a number of good points, and might still come together in a pleasing manner. I'm reluctant to commit myself to watching the remainder since I'm not confident that it will make sense to me, but I probably will anyhow, since I don't get much satisfaction out of giving up on a series part way through. Just don't expect it to be very high on my list of priorities...

Unevaluated aoneish [series:1659#1615]
haha, jan-chan beat me to it.

episode 1.

i had no idea what this anime was going into it. this is either going to be very genius, or very very stupid. i'm not sure yet. either way, it's very very twisted so far. i'm not even sure what's going on or who's really who and everyone seems a little bit insane and if they aren't insane they're kinda stupid. which is understandable. and i dislike the fact that women's solution to a world without men is to become more like men. haha. seriously, most the char design is so..mannish. and i see the yuri coming. nvm it's already here. so yea, like i said, it's either going to be a fantastically constructed piece of science fiction, or it's going to be utterly stupid. two episodes to wrap it up.

TBC.
