Everyone calls it "Beatrice". That strange power that responds to the will of certain people and is capable of doing many wondrous and dangerous things. And Yoshimura Mamoru has been accepted to a high school that specializes in teaching the use of the strange ‘magic power’ to its students. On his way to school, he sees a pretty 2nd year student standing under the cherry trees. After a few words with her, she suddenly blushes and asks him to go out with her! In his first class, he is surprised to notice that everybody is staring at him - because of the rumor that Takasu Ayako, the ‘angel of death’ actually confessed to him! And then suddenly, he is summoned to the student council chambers and is offered a position with Takasu-sempai on her student committee! It is going to be a very busy school year for Mamoru.

Mamoru’s new girlfriend is Takasu Ayako. She is a year older than him, a lot taller than he is, very beautiful, the committee leader for school discipline, a genius at using her ‘Beatrice’ powers and the TERROR of the school. Nobody would ever believe Mamoru if he tried to tell them that she is really a very nice and shy girl.

Final review soon...

Ep 22: The final enemy makes it's appereance and the situation doesn't look good for our heroes. Mamoru needs to step up his game for this one.

Ep 20: Emelenzia put her soul on the line with this ep. She reveals her feelings and regrets to Ayako and challenges her to a fight on an epic scale after coming to a decision from the last ep. That battle was really good (though it was cut short). As fierce as the battle was, Emelenzia and Ayako both come to an understanding and vow not to give up and lose to one another regarding a certain someone. Silver Maria and her peon, Abiko, strike again and put Ayako out for the count!!!

Ep 19: This ep puts on the hurt for a certain character. The ep itself was all lovey-dovey with Valentine's Day emotions (Shinoe's drama act was priceless), but Emelenzia took it very seriously. Her change throughout the series has been the most significant of all the characters. Only pain and confusion awaits her now. The drama scale has been maxed out and is still rising...

Ep 18: This ep had me on the ropes. Aside from the obvious blunders that Ayako and Mamoru kept making with trusting this strange little girl who came out of the blue and suddenly wanted to help them in their quest to be alone, there were some names mentioned with no explanations and plots going on that made no sense. I guess this "Silver-haired Maria" is the true strongest among the three Beatrice users and she wants to test Ayako and Mamoru with the help (or at the request of) Johan!! The guy who is always stalking Ayako was really working for (???). I'm pretty sure they mentioned this Misaki guy before but I can't put my finger on it. I know he was the guy from back then, but there is more to his story then that. Too many holes were left open in this ep. On a good note, it seems that Emelenzia finally notices what's been bugging her regarding Mamoru. This ep was filled with confusion while still being it's romantic self...

Ep 14: Mamoru puts everything he has on the line in order to stand up to Johan. As one of my favorite eps, this shows his determination and resolve to remain as Ayako's lover. Johan gives Mamoru the tactical victory this time, but he isn't going to stop until Ayako is his and his alone. Fantastic ep...

Ep 13: As expected, Mamoru is simply no match for that monster. No amount of training can possibly close the gap between them. Johan is poised to take Ayako away from him and there is little Mamoru can do to stop him. Even with Ayako's obvious objections, even she can't deny that the two strongest Beatrice users in the world are a perfect match for each other. Mamoru's powers have exploded exponentially and he is getting stronger with every passing minute, but will it be enough to save Ayako before its too late! This story is freakin' amazing!!!

Ep 12: I don't know how else to describe this one so I'll just be direct: this ep had One Of The Most Romantic Kiss Scenes I Have Ever Seen In My Entire Anime Career. It was stunning, beautiful, and most fitting for the Christmas occasion. An unbelievable scene for an unbelievable anime. I can't believe just how fierce the romance is between Ayako and Mamoru. Who would've thought that it could get to be that serious between them! Just when the ep comes to a close, the worst possible person finally arrives in Japan!!! It is a guarantee that things are going to get even more insane.

Ep 9: You know something? This title really has a lot going for it. Each ep is different and intriguing. Ayako came over to meet the family to lunch and learns more about Mamoru. This ep focused entirely on Mamoru's past and how he lived with his mother and sister, Itsume. Itsume cares deeply for her brother, though she never shows him any affection. I was lead to believe there were some deeper feelings involved and the anime does an excellent job of setting up predictions and showing end results. I can't believe this title has been sitting here and nobody mentioned it? I love this title with a passion. Just as free starz said, "this title is a must see"!

Ep 8: Your undeniably funny ep involving naked girls trapped in a hot spring with no shampoo and the boys on a quest to deliver the shampoo in person. With plenty of deaths, traps, explosions, spirit boosting, tons of naked flesh, and enough laughs to make me have trouble breathing properly: This title has escalated to might win an award status. Apparently, Mamoru became a man by the end of the ep (LOL).

Ep 7: Things are really getting crazy with this ep. The first real fight of the series and it gets pretty good. It seems that Ayako falling in love has made her weak and a certain someone's sister has come to test Ayako's weakness. It doesn't look good for Ayako until Mamoru's feelings are relayed to her and she is filled with an enormous strength. After easily leveling the playing field, the sister relays a message from her big brother. The message hits the lead couple hard and it will serve to test their love for each other. This is getting good...

Ep 3: This ep was fantastic! I was laughing the ENTIRE time. This story is going to be superb. I loved every moment and you get a great romance between the main leads. The student council plays hide and seek with the lead couple and they use the mansions security systems to always stay ahead of Ayako's plans. She has to beat them senseless and convince them that they didn't find her. It was hilarious. Mitsuki kept taking pictures of everything and I was on the floor laughing like a madman. The lead couple got even closer towards the end of the ep and I was moved. I love this title. I'm going to watch the whole series in one shot!!!!!!!!!!!

First impression: Wow. That was insane. Not a regular school romance but more a steroid enhanced super heroine/super agent plot. The strongest girl in the land is suddenly taken over by our weak and feeble male lead Mamoru. With a sudden confession, the school is all crazy for the kid who stole the heart of the "walking disaster of a woman", Ayako. The power of Beatrice (or magic) is the power of one's will to do great or terrible things and Ayako is considered the head bi*** when it comes to this power. Her peers within the student council love to watch her in embarrassing situations and therefore, have invited Mamoru to join their ranks knowing that she gets beat red in the face with him around. Being the strongest has some negatives as it involves being constantly targeted by those who would like to take your life by any means necessary. She is constantly on the move and has to be sharp or her enemies will catch her one of these days.

I can't say it was bad, but I will say that it was enough to win me over. I now have a solid anime to enjoy.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1476#628]
(Seven episodes watched):

This show is definitely worth watching, but for a while I was having a hard time really getting into it, perhaps because I still have little idea of exactly what "Beatrice" is. However, with episodes six and seven some interesting opponents have finally emerged and things are looking up. The OP and ED songs are unexceptional. I will definitely continue to watch.

My favorite line (so far): "Well, there is the problem of it (her hair) taking four hours to set every morning, but it's worth it"

I am so ANGRY That only 2 episodes of this have been subbed. It's GREAT! Well for the 2 whole episodes I have seen. It's funny, a little bit of drama, and a great female lead. In fact it looks like Maburaho without the Harem.

Note : I changed the image as the Bikini pic is quite good, it's really not what the anime is about.

Episode 3 : This officially moves up as my 2nd favorite comedy series (below The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzamiya), it's such a shame it isn't subbed better.
  • 02.05 : Eps 4-6. I loved this series so much, it's funny, a little risque, and just an all around smacking good time. Too bad ToyBox is the only ones subbing this and they are doing it at a snails pace.
  • 10.20 : Sekai's Fansubs aren't too bad but their source is out of focus. Finally we learn that Mamoru and Ayako have met before!
More if I get to see more.

Rent 8 8 9 8 9 8 chibi [series:1476#2380]
Is it a comedy, a school romance, or an action series? Yes!

A lot of school romance comedies end with the confession scene. In this one, the confession occurs before the opening credits of the first episode, so there's never any mystery about who ends up with whom. Instead the episodes consist of alternating relationship testing/building and magical battles, with a heavy slathering of comedy on all of it. While occasionally uneven, the humor is often right up there with Full Metal Panic Fumoffu, which is pretty darned good. The magical battles have never been something I watch a series for, there's rarely much rhyme or reason to who wins or looses, but here they at least move the series story forward and provide a catalyst for the characters' interaction.

I was recently re-watching Mamoru while stuck at home with a cold, and I was surprised how well it still held up after a couple of years. I also was able to pick up on several cultural references I was ignorant of the first time around, like the tag line from Jigoku Shoujo, or a parody of a scene from O'Henry's short story "The Last Leaf", and there's undoubtedly more I missed.

This series suffered from aborted fansubs when it came out. Although another group eventually picked up the last three episodes, the translation quality was much lower. It's been licensed for R1 distribution, but I've found no evidence of a DVD release here yet, so it may be a hard find.

Rent+ rating.

Unevaluated Jan-Chan [series:1476#967]
The first episode of this series is strange, very silly and very enjoyable. I did find myself really enjoying a story with a different spin on the standard high school romance story.

Parts of the story remind me of Gokujou Seitokai, with an all powerful student council in absolute control of the school. They even have student body leaders responsible for the school's security, science and public relations affairs.

And Takasu Ayako is an absolute sweetheart on steroids! She is very shy when around Mamoru, but when she gets pumped-up, she becomes a real terror and some of the things she gets into are pretty funny!!!.

I am looking forward to the next episode of this series.

I posted some images of the first episode.
