In the year 2142, the survivors of the devastated earth have retreated to an isolated high-tech colony called “ECOBAN”. But their continued survival is dependent on the efforts of the “diggers” - those 2nd class citizens who harvest the critical energy supplies, while struggling to survive in the squalor and the pollution outside of the city. At a time when dwindling energy reserves and rebellious strike activity of the diggers have raised tensions a boiling point, an ECOBAN police officer finds herself fighting an intruder who has managed to sneak into the very heart of the city’s computer core. Officer Jay is shocked to discover that the intruder is Shua, her childhood friend and someone who died some ten years ago.

Great animation – lots of computer generated backdrops and images with very good R1 script and dubbing. The weakest element is the plot which is a bit linear and predictable, but still very entertaining.

Well worth the watch or rent (or whatever….).

The posted snapshots from the Movie web site.

(And yes, I know that this is really a Korean anime movie! We discussed this earlier. But since is it listed in both ANIDB and ANN, it probably should be mentioned here as well)

  • Drama: Med/High (you'll see it coming but it does happen)
  • Comedy: None (not much to laugh in a post-apocalyptic world)
  • Action: Med/High (the last third is quite a riot)
  • SciFi: High (world & story based on advanced science)
  • Ecchi: None (love triangle but nothing visual)
Sigh... had I been allowed to review this thingy here a year earlier I would remember more details...

This movie has been the one with the highest production budget for a Korean anime at its time, and it shows: The "twin brother" of Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho features breathtaking animation and some excellent musical pieces, most notably during the battle sequences. The post-apocalyptic setting features a similar cultural clash as, say, Mononoke Hime, resulting in a similar story development. Then again, the lead characters form a classical triangle that seems forced in this story, and the plausibility of the characters' actions is the weak part of the show for me.

Like many movies, this one is more for the eye and ear than for the brain. But if you don't expect too much about the storyline you'll get a chilling ride that is well worth a "Rent".
