Kemono Zume made for a solid mature title, for the most part, as it explored the challenges of Yuka and Toshiko's forbidden relationship because of the former's status as a monster. The series does reasonably well at exploring the complications that arise with the coupling as they find themselves on the run from Toshiko's former comrades in the Kifuken and having troubles with having a sex life as the arousal drives Yuka to enter her monster form as a Shokujuki. Other prominent members of the Kifuken also have their characters explored as we come to know of some rather shocking and tragic developments which the elder members of the clan went through connected to the Shokujuki from long ago, as well as those among the younger clan's generation with either status or unrequited love.

The animation style really took some getting used to for me as the drawing style looked a bit crude and the animation in action scenes got quite choppy at points. The final episodes also went down in quality a bit with their plotting and mood thanks to the seemingly childish and over-the-top antics of the main baddie of the series. Anyone who gets queasy at strong violent and sexual content in an anime may also want to stray clear of the series as there are graphic killings of humans and Shokujuki, frontal nudity and a good number of onscreen sexual situations.

If you don't mind the visual style and graphic content of Kemono Zume, then you can look forward to a solid series focused on Yuka, Toshiro and prominent members of the Kifuken dealing with various problems concerning the affairs of either their clan or the Shokujuki.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:1376#628]
(one episode watched):

The ugly, freakish character designs had a fingernails-on-chalkboard effect on me, as did the use of only a handful of colors. Yuka is rather not cute for a series' main character. It seemed to me that the nonsensical visuals didn't work well with what might be an OK story. The SD jokes were more annoying than funny; it's hard to tell what's supposed to be taken seriously and what isn't. I'm not so sure I want to watch the rest of this.

Avoid 8 8 9 9 5 Tad [series:1376#3076]
The series starts out with incredible potential. It's your usual beauty and the beast flare but with a twist, this time being the woman is a flesh eating cannibal monster. But despite quirky and beautiful animation, the series looses it's luster and seriousness by the last 4 episodes or so. It becomes twisted, almost childish, and at times you wonder if the series creators are drawn to the same insanity.

Please avoid if you don't like awkwardness in your animes. Characters you care for will die, emotions are never fully explained as well as history, and in the end you'll only be left more confused then you probably should have been.

Buy Jan-Chan [series:1376#967]
(first posted Sept '06)

Episode # 3 has been released by the (AF-F&Y-F). This is a Romeo and Juliet story between a human monster-killer and a beautiful flesh-eater, but the style of animation is interesting and uncommon. It very much reminds me of style used in Mind Game.

All 13 episodes have been fan-subbed and this is still a very weird, fun and interesting series.

If you are into the off-beat, off-center or weird anime, then you might what to considered this to be a Must Watch type of anime, but just don't expect much of a linear or rational storyline.... but it does both charm and entertain .... if only on an (fun) off-beat adventure track.

I really like the subtitle drama, weird animation and strange story-line of this series, so pls permit me to over-rate as being a BUY type of anime story.
