The anime centers around two sisters - Kyou (age 15) and Asu (age 9) - whose mother died from an illness and whose father, heavily in debt, has run away, leaving his kids behind. Now they are living in a small and miserable apartment from the little money the older sister gets for her part-time job. But as long as they have each other and are supported by kind people they continue their every-day life never losing the bright smiles on their faces nor their strong spirit.

This is a heartwarming story about two poor, yet happy, sisters.

(Watched 1 episode...)

Too cute and melodramatic for my tastes. While the premise of seeing two sisters live on their own seems interesting, the first episode of this series felt too emotionally overboard for me with the misunderstanding that took place. Asu's voice gave me visions of a certain braid-headed genius girl from Azumanga Daioh (TV).

I'm definitely not seeing more of this series anytime soon, if ever.

I had a feeling this one was going to be a quiet but enjoyable anime. I was right.

Art, Animation and Character Design
The art and animation was your average. The animation itself was pretty smooth so I'm sure the frame rate was above the norm. As for character designs, they were cute and lovable. Both sisters, Kyo and Asu are adorable.

Music
The OP was nothing of interest. However, it's bearable and probably to some, a decent piece. The rest of the music in the anime was more or less the same.

Series and Episode Story
This is a heart warming tale of two sisters struggling to make it on their own.... no mother or father. We're taken into their lives as they go through daily struggles and what it means to be poor and alone. But even through their struggles and hardships, they know that they have each other and that's all that matters. There's no character development but it doesn't really need any either. The story is about the two girls as they are in the present day. As the little tales through each episode is told, at times you might find yourself holding back tears from the pure innocence of girls in whatever situation they might be in. Then after, you'll feel good after whatever resolution would follow. This is a good gentle story telling that isn't much about anything but at the same time, tells a lot about a strong family bond.

Overall, I enjoyed this anime. There's really nothing to speak of in ways of a plot, but it's honest-to-goodness and heart warming moments of two girls that will leave you all nice and warm inside.

Buy 9 8 8 7 9 10 Devil Doll [series:1367#752]
[Score: 83% = Buy-. Other recommended Silent Drama anime: Usagi Drop, Haibane Renmei, Uta Kata, Asatte no Houkou, Aishiteru Ze Baby, Piano, Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto]
  • Drama: Med/High (mostly children's issues but keep your tissue at hand)
  • Comedy: Low (there must be some, it's a children scenario after all)
  • Action: None (the drama plays on a different level)
  • SciFi: None (plain old earth, normal people)
  • Ecchi: None (clean and pure, recommended for children)
With overly childish Music (but a wonderful score in the final episode), cute Art (with occasional SD elements) and rather simple Animation, it's the storytelling what this series is all about (as there's not a lot of Character Development taking place, most of it happening to side characters, but both sisters are almost awfully cute). Large parts of this story are told from the angle of two nine-year-old girls (Asu and Ginko), so this story may appear a bit childish to the older audience; then again, that's part of the charm this series offers. And whether an event was important from some 'objective' point of view isn't really relevant for the size of children's tears anyway. Each episode has plucked my heartstrings, calling for the best Episode Story rating available.

What does this anime offer you? Most notably, tears - lots and lots and lots of tears. Stay far away from this series if you're out for an action comedy of any kind (albeit this series does have its funny moments, such as the "guidelines how to survive with almost no money" during the commercial break, or Kyou's nice little weaknesses). But if you look for a pure, charming Story of the type of Mimi wo Sumaseba, Aishiteru Ze Baby or Piano with a strong positive message (of two sisters helping each other as much as they can despite their obvious limitations), considering what's really important for a human being, with an ending that resolves all open questions, something you would really want your own kids to watch (as this series is probably targeting a much younger audience with its idealized view of the world - somehow it is hard to believe there will ever be a real problem for those sisters if they're so good at surviving under these conditions), you're absolutely on the right track. Imagine NieA_7 without the aliens - only better. Or Tonari no Totoro without the fantasy element, turned into a series.

All in all this series seems like the very definition of Moé to me. I'm laughing as well as crying in every episode. How could I not give a "Buy" to this anime? If it were up to me I'd order everyone who considers himself part of the "no future generation" to watch it.

I've been reading the manga in parallel to watching this show, and the animated version is a huge improvement over the original bits and pieces that have been put together forming reasonable stories in the TV series (which nonetheless remains fully compatible to the manga's story and characters).
