Before Voices of a Distant Star gave Makoto Shinkai the respect of those into anime, there was this quick 5-minute short. Like Voices of a Distant Star, She and Her Cat was created single-handedly by Shinkai. There's honestly not much I could say about this short. The presentation is simple at best with black-and-white visuals, barely any animated scenes, and simple designs of the cats. But on the positive end, scenery is vivid and detailed. The only voice is through the perspective of the cat as he narrates on how his life goes with a young woman, implied to be having love woes through what is seen. Compared to Shinkai's later works, this short is down-to-earth lacking any elements of sci-fi or fantasy to it.

This short serves as a demonstration of Shinkai's computer artwork skills before the success he got of his later works. It won't be worth watching more than a couple times at most.

Shinkai Makoto's works aren't my pigeon. Someone told me that Shinkai actually doesn't write different stories at all, he just repeats one message over and over again: "Long distance relations suck". That's the message at least here as well as in Hoshi no Koe. Actually, five minutes of anime material are in fact the appropriate length for this message...
Art is fine, most of it even excellent, but I dislike the strong contrast between the beautiful backgrounds and the minimalistic presentation of both cats. Animation doesn't get more than an average rating from me due to the many moving stills and even frames with only text on it - this may be artsy like in Kareshi Kanojo no Jijoo but this isn't animation then, it's more like a moving painting. The melancholic piano-solo Music and the background noises are quite appropriate for the story but not really memorable.
As for the Story, there's in fact a tiny surprise the moment when you learn who's the narrator, but other than that... well, slice of life with a bit of drama (that telephone call).
Characters are practically nonexistent - which is a huge problem for me. Yes, this whole work resembles a poem - but I dislike poems for the exact same reason. You get a certain mood, perhaps even something to think about, but you don't get anything about the characters involved.
All in all it's a respectable work that shows how one man can produce an anime that doesn't have to be ashamed of comparisons with commercial works. Then again, I'm an anime fan... and I expect more than this for my leisure time.

At only five minutes, there's not a lot to say about this. Basically, a girl takes in a cat, and the cat narrates about his life with the girl and his love for his owner. Really not much you can say, but I kept being reminded of English Lit. class where we had to analyze short stories which were whimsical in nature and had an apparent point to make which I didn't care to grab. ^_^;; That doesn't mean it is bad, but it means it didn't really grip me either.

Still, what I do have to say is that Shinkai-sensei clearly knows his stuff when it comes to art and animation. Even though this is a black-and-white production he did on his computer, the beauty of the work still comes through on an artistic level. It is this rather than the story that causes me to rate this a "Rent."
