Fifth-grader Toriyasu and his little sister Meeko have a dog named Papadoll, who has been missing for the past week. One night, two cats take the two children to the distant cat land of Banipal Witt, where Papadoll was abducted. Because of his long exposure to Banipal Witt`s sun, Papadoll mutated into a giant dog monster, terrorizing the city under the control of the evil Princess Buburina, who has the curse of turning anyone she touches into balloons. Toriyasu, Meeko and the cats have until the next sunrise to turn Papadoll and the ballooned citizens of Banipal Witt back to normal and return to their home planet - or end up with the same fate as their dog.

I have to wonder if the creators of this film were on something when they came up with the idea for it. Known as Catnapped when released in America years ago, this film explores two siblings being whisked away to a parallel world inhabited by anthropomorphic cats and are tasked with trying to stop the rampage of their pet dog, who has mutated into a monstrous form due to prolonged exposure to the cat world's sun and is under the control of an evil princess. On the one hand, I have to give kudos to the creativity that went into designing the cat world of this series. The cats live in a world where they practically live on blimps and evil princess, Buburina, has the magical ability to inflate any cat she touches that she uses as leverage to threaten others into her submission. It's a gorgeously-colored world and certain to attract the primary demographic of children it aims for. Also, the film has a moral in regards to Papadoll, the pet dog of the human kids, that is subtle in how its handled and not hammered out in its focus like you'd find with many Western animated films. However as the film is mainly geared for younger audiences, this does limit the appeal of the film for older audiences, unless you find yourself gawking over the bizarre animated world it offers up like I did throughout its 75-minute run.
