This is actually the first OVA of Fushigi Yugi, and the second is Fushigi Yugi: Eikouden. I have given Fushigi Yugi: Oni a well-deserved rating of "Avoid", because that's exactly what it should be...avoided, 'cause it sucks. I had already seen Fushigi Yugi, so it was only natural to watch Oni. Oni is an installment in the Fushigi Yugi saga that should never have been written, and which I want erased from my memory. You could watch Fushigi Yugi, skip watching Oni, and then watch Fushigi Yugi: Eikouden, without Oni having any effect on the storyline. I was extremely disappointed that characters the fans liked had been ruined in this 9 episode series. The main two characters to become victims to Watase's butchering, was Tamahome and Tasuki. The Tasuki character only suffered minor damage, what with him being turned into an attempted rapist and all. The next ruined character, and probably the worst, was Tamahome. What was the purpose of changing a loveable character like Tamahome, into the boring, and depressed weakling Taka? And why were dead characters hanging around in a Casper the Friendly Ghost way? I thought Miaka and Tamahome's habit of screaming out each other's names repeatedly in Fushigi Yugi was irritating, of course that was until I watched this. The character designs have had a slight change, because the characters have supposedly aged a bit, but the animation looks the same to me. The soundtrack's acceptable though, with even more Akemi Satou songs, as well as songs by other artists. I have no complaints about the English dub. Fushigi Yugi: Oni is not worth watching, and not watching it won't make watching Fushigi Yugi: Eikouden any more confusing. The only noticable changes in Eikouden are that Tamahome's name has been changed to Taka, and his hair's a different color. All in all, Oni's a waste of time and money. I really enjoyed the second Fushigi Yugi OVA. It improved on everything (in my opinion) that I thought was weak in the TV series. It has fantastic animation. Something that I had wanted Fushigi Yugi to have ever since I started watching the TV series. The animation greatly shows Watase Yu's art style in a much better light than it did in the TV series. I liked Miaka and Yui's new look, Miaka looked much better with her hair down like it was and the Yotsubadai uniform was a lot better than her old brown uniform that I got so sick of. Yui looked very pretty with her longer hair as well. The two vocal songs in the OVA were very good, great lyrics and a great voice. I especially liked how they played one of them while showing fast flashback shots of the most memorable events with Miaka and Tamahome, it gave me a better feeling about Miaka and Tamahome seeing all those moments flashing by with that great song playing. The Chichiri episode was fantastic character development for the funny monk with the mask who seemed to get left by the wayside with Mitsukake and Chriko in terms of characterization. Miaka wasn't as annoying as she had been in the TV series, I think it was that she actually became a lot more mature (as in she actually got some maturity) and she became a better character in my eyes. Although the OVA wasn't as sappy as the TV series, it still got mushy near the end. I think the ending still put a nice end to the story though. My main problem was how monsters would appear out of NOWHERE for no reason and attack Miaka and the warriors. Okay, this one is worse than the first one. Again, animation has improved and the music isn't terrible, but the Tamahoma/Taka situation just really bothered me. Who is who? The whole thing is just frustrating. They screw with all of the characters. In a way it is sort of different (didn't say 'worth it') to see a little more about Chichiri, Hotohori, Nuriko, etc...but they just really butchered it. Tasuki was really ruined. You don't really care who dies anymore, you just want the insanity to stop. The Miaka/Tamahome thing was just truly overdone. The end scene was umm...ridiculous. By the time you're through watching this, you will just want them to have disappeared. I didn't find any of the bonus clips to be funny (except for the Taiitskun one). This series may get a little more points for explaining better than the first, but the whole general idea was just awful and more confusing than the first. Confused? Yes, me too. This OVA is great!! Hmm, I only watched the first two episodes yet I can't find a single fault! It is very well written and continiues the sad and dark storyline of the Fushigi Yuugi TV series. The animation is EXCELLENT and the characters are just as lovable as ever. The intro song "Star" is one of the best I've ever heard, and "Fushigi Akugi" is hillarious! This is a deffinite buy for any Fushigi Yuugi fans. (Although I still have to watch the rest of the episodes-.-).

Watase Yuu's proclivity towards claiming she's doing things 'for the fans' or 'as fan service' really was annoying throughout the entirety of the original story of Fushigi Yuugi (volumes 1-13 or the TV series), and her insistence that the OAV II/volumes 14-18 story were done 'for the fans' does not make it any more excusable. On the contrary, it seems more of a sellout. It might have worked if she had taken a hint from other, more successful and likeable continuations, such as Sailormoon R or a similar series, wherein the heroes who had been killed off in the previous series were restored to life. It would not have been a difficult matter, either, considering the nature of the Universe of the Four Gods. Instead, she opts for weak 'ghost humor', which stops being funny after about the third pathetic pun. There is nothing touching or interesting about this OAV series, and even the music is not anywhere near as good as the previous one. She rides roughshod over the characters, as if adding insult to injury; if you thought they were disgraced enough at the end of the TV series/manga 13, you haven't seen anything yet. Ruined in particular are the characters of Tamahome and Tasuki, but next on the list are Hotohori and Nuriko, all of which suffer from Watase Yuu's hideous writing. Bad dialogue, less-than-par music, hideous story, and flashy, attractive animation. Yet more proof that the old adage is true: quit while you're ahead and leave them wanting more, because if you try and give the audience more for their money, it's just going to leave them going home with a hollow feeling. And I certainly felt that way after first reading this story in manga form, then viewing it on my television. What a horrible legacy and a disgraceful way to remember and otherwise not-too-awful series. If you want to retain any respect at all for Fushigi Yuugi, please avoid this OAV series. The only good parts about it are Miaka finally standing up to her mother and the almost-nude scenes of Hotohori, Chichiri, and Tasuki. And really, you can just find the picture online somewhere.
