In feudal Japan there exist many different styles of samurai skills. Students of these skills are continually striving to improve themselves and earn the title of Master of the Sword. Musashi is one who has probably earned it. His double swords flow like the wind and he can defeat any opponent. He wanders around the land looking for talented samurai to fight. While debating whether to protect a young lord, he sees a samurai eating in a small restaurant, Yakumo Mutsu. Later he sees Yakumo defeat 20 men without drawing his Wakizashi blade, displaying the unarmed combat skills of a Mutsu Enmei. Musashi decides there that Yakumo is the man he needs to fight to find out who is the best.

This epic series covers many years and the main character changes as the episodes progress. You meet a new character every few episodes (as each arc allows 20-60? years to pass) and new troubles. Basically though, each arc will contain a master of the Mutsu Enmei style (Bare handed no weapons) and how they use their skills to protect their lords and loves.

Of all of the various (quasi)historical samurai anime titles that I seen, this series is my all time fav.

Broken up into four main story arcs, each set a different time in Japanese history, this series tells the tale of four masters of the 'legendary' secret unarmed martial arts skills known as Mutsu Enmei. Taught only to members of their secretive clan, a true Mutsu Enmei master is rumored to be able to take on an armed samurai and defeat them in a few quick strikes. And while the focus of each story arc is different, they all share a common thread of involving a Mutsu Enmei. It is even hinted that each new Mutsu Enmei master is the son or descendant of the character appearing in the first story.

The span of the series is about 250 years. ↗Miyamoto Musashi, who appears in the first story arc lived in the 1600's. The last story arc takes place around 1850 during the early years of the ↗Meiji era, (at about the same time that the Rurouni Kenshin story takes place).

The characters are fun, the animation is fluid and the combat scenes are grand. This series is well worth the time spent watching.

I bumped into this by accident (I was bored), and I had to watch 2 of the 3 discs immediately. I love it! Yakumo is a great character (Though he isn't the main - I thought) and Musashi is so relentless on fighting him. I noticed on the 2nd disk that 20 years have passed and it's a new main character with little or no mention of the older ones, but I don't feel cheated, I actually like watching progression.

Note there is a bit of blood, but nothing on scale of Gantz.

Edit : 3rd disk finish. Damn I love this stuff. 3 More DVDs to go! The epic battle in the 3rd disk lasted a whole 1 EPISODE! None of that Dragonball Z crap where everyone talks about their super powers for 5 episodes and fights for 10.
