Loveless is the first anime where I jumped into the world of shounen-ai themed titles. It certainly has enough sexual symbolism to reflect on its themes. The world of Loveless is full of cat-people whose ears symbolize their sexual activity. Find someone without ears and it would be quite obvious that they aren't virgins anymore. Then, there is the nature of the fighter-sacrifice magic duels. The bond between the pairs in each duel determine the strengths of their attacks and defenses. Add in some chains and shackles to the mix at some points and you may have visions of bondage dancing through your head. Then, let's not forget about the type of person Soubi is. Might as well not go into any further detail without spoiling things for the series.

The main focus of Loveless is on Ritsuka and his mindset towards developing relationships with others. We get a good psychological focus on how the boy feels with closeness to others since the death of his brother, Seimei. He isn't too positive at the least and he regards Soubi as a pest when they first meet each other. But Soubi's presence in his life changes his perception of closeness with others and the changes in his personality show as the series progresses.

The highlight of animation for Loveless is the magic duels. Instead of calling out attacks or just having a simple clash, each fighter calls out incantations where wording is important as each spell used is dependant on the situation pairs face in a duel. There is a good amount of fluid movement in these scenes with the various spell castings taking place. While character designs show off attractive male characters, coloring is faded in the designs and artwork to convey the mystery and dark themes present in this series.

This series does have enough plot holes though that it leaves unsolved. What is Soubi's relationship with 7th Moon? Who killed Seimei? Why is 7th Moon targeting Ritsuka? What is the reason behind the fighter-sacrifice duels? There's also the fact that the ending leaves things rather open as things are left unresolved with a new enemy showing their face in the last moments of the series. For these reasons, I give the series a Rent.

If you're not a fan of anime with shounen-ai or shoujo-ai symbolism, then this series isn't for you. If you can handle such content, Loveless makes for a decent watch. Just don't go expecting this series to answer all your questions regarding the nature of the foes that Ritsuka and Soubi are up against.

This is not may kind of anime as it is yaoi type but can't I stop watching it until I have finished all 12 eps. This is a very good anime that easily could be a 26 eps but it's 12 eps, even after it has ended there is still a lot of unanswered quetions like who send does agents after Ritsuka, what is the 7th moon, who killed Siemie (Ritsuka'S broter) and for what reason.

Unevaluated Jan-Chan [series:1022#967]
First three episodes of this series are out as a fan-sub. I have to admit that while this is not (normally) my type of anime series, but I find myself being very entertained. This is a very strange and mixed story of a past history between Ritsuka's brother Seimei and the 'fighter' Soubi, and how Soubi comes to protect Ritsuka from strange forces that he never dreamed could exist, much less want to come after him. This story has a type of quasi mystical-spirtual flavor to it .... more later.

I do want to alert you that this is series is starting with a very Yaoi/Yuri flavor. But it is fun to watch, with a very short Ritsuka getting his feelings all mixed up by both the quiet charm of the older dashing Soubi and the very cute and dynamic, but taller Hawatari-chan, as they both chase after him. Soubi has called himself a servant to 'his master', sooo…. might there room for Hawatari to get close to Ritsuka, despite his special relationship with Soubi?

Update – episode nine is out a fansub, this series is only getting stranger (and better). With the storyline moving in several directions at once, there is a lot going on.

Agents of the seventh moon have appeared to challenge both Ritsuka and Soubi. Appearing as a fighter/sacrifice team, they have similar abilities in magic as Soubi, but he proves himself to be stronger and defeats them. As Ritsuka attends his weekly therapy sessions to deal with his feelings of detachment from his mother and the grief at the loss of brother, his attractive young therapist begins to appear to hold some special feelings for him. While she does not know about Ritsuka’s relationship with Soubi, her comments suggest that she considers Hawatari to be a rival(?). A second 7th Moon team is out stalking Ritsuka when they encounter Shinonome Hitomi, one of Ritsuka’s schoolteachers. They use their magic to ensnare her to their will, at least until Soubi shows up to confront them. Soubi does defeat them and saves Hitomi from their cruelty. Hitomi is grateful to Soubi for rescuing her (not that she understood what was going on,) and begins to have feelings for the dashing and reserved Soubi.

With hints as to the sensei who originally trained Soubi in his skills as a fighter having a relationship with the 7th Moon, there appears to now be a deep rivalry between them. The agents of the 7th Moon are crafted warriors known as zeros, who feel no pain but suffer from a number of limitations.

One should understand that having ears (and a tail) is a sign of someone's 'inexperience' with the (same or) opposite sex. Some of the characters even have clip-on ears to hide their ‘adulthood’.

More later! I am enjoying this series.
