Been a while since I last watched anything influenced from Leiji Matsumoto. Galaxy Railways is mostly in line with Matsumoto's prior works with bending elements of sci-fi and attempted philosophical musings about fate and destiny in its focus on Manabu Yuuki, a young man that joins a space-equivalent of the Japanese Self-Defense Force where they travel through space using trains (I kid you not) to protect civilian crafts against human, robot and alien threat alike. The series starts off mostly episodic in its developments as it either attempts showing off some sort of moral involving fate and destiny or fleshes out one of the SDF members that Manabu becomes acquainted with. As a lead character, Manabu is rather difficult to connect with as his angsty and idealist character can be quite grating at many points due to his "jump in and think things through later" mentality that other shounen titles love to milk. On the other hand, several of the supporting characters making up the SDF are mostly likable and get a decent amount of fleshing out, particularly Bruce who has some rather tragic elements to his character that several episodes in the series focus on. Still though, the series suffers from a number of the major flaws found in many of Matsumoto's works such as trying to heavily dramatize minor character deaths that mean little to the audience due to their lack of depth and screen time, having some story elements that go against the anime's sci-fi premise (a ghost train, time tunnels and a memory-eating spirit) and a rather sloppy introduction to a major enemy threat at the end of the series who are quite shallow themselves, especially in motives. Matsumoto fans are likely to gather up to this series. But if you are not a fan of Matsumoto's storytelling style in general, I'd skip this series.

Through 1 episode...

I've long heard of Captain Harlock and when FUNimation licensed GR, I thought I'd give it a look-see. I'm not sure how much of the other series one needs to have seen before seeing this, so I'll take my chances. The concept of having railroads traveling space is weird, made even wierder in that they are armed. Hmmmm...I'd have to watch more, but the first episode hasn't reached out and grabbed me.

I loved this series. I don't know how it really connects to Galaxy Express 999 but it doesn't make an Alternate Universe version very well.

First 8 are important and last 8 episodes are. Middle 8 is just filler.
