Right now what's new tries to group a bunch of different changes to the site done by one review into a single block with a time range. This is fantastic when you're looking at summaries of people editing series, or wiki pages, since these usually don't have any interaction between users...

However, when you've got a bunch of people posting to a thread in the forums, grouping these things produces odd viewing and makes it hard to the order that things were posted from the what's new page.

I agree with the idea. Like how we could take out:

… updated follow up #3017 to the forum topic “The 10 CURRENT FAVORITE titles”.

… posted follow up #3017 to the forum topic “The 10 CURRENT FAVORITE titles”.

where it just talks about the same post number #3017. Make it just remove "posted" line and let it say "updated" line only (when there is an update of course). That would cut down most of the clutter without losing the function of the What's new page to see new things being added.

The double entry there is a result of the fact that two records are created when you make a new topic. One for your topic and one for the first post. But yes, they should be merged in the What's New page.
