Hey y'all, purging 2000ish reviewer accounts that've never logged in or done anything. Mostly bogus email addresses and obvious spam.

Say, why is my average rating listed as 'avoid'? I actually seldom assign that one. It probably ought to be 'unevaluated', because I sample a lot of series and drop many of them after the first one or two episodes.

Mikomi has been acting funny lately--several times I have gotten a message of 'Oops! We could not connect to Mikomi' from the internet; other times the website has seem to go into edit mode, with different typefaces.

It seems that if I spend too much time on a page here (updating a review, perhaps) the page locks up and eventually I get a 'This page can't be displayed' message. If I haven't saved it somewhere else, I may lose whatever I have written. Could this be because I haven't accepted the urging to install Internet Explorer 11? (If it ain't broke...)

When I get the 'This page cannot be displayed' message, and click on 'Fix connection problems', what I get is “Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (anime.mikomi.org) is not responding”. If I wait awhile I can reconnect, but before long Mikomi locks up again—it seems to happen when I click on a button to save changes to a review or go to review mode, etc. If it happened while I was saving stuff, most of the time the content does indeed get saved, but I get disconnected. I just went to review mode (it took forever but eventually worked), and instead of the usual mode I get what I think must be Rebecca's editing mode. It has different typefaces and the table of contents (Add A New Series, What's New, By Rating, etc) is at the bottom of the page.

Some days Mikomi works well enough for me to get something done (though the responses to my clicks are always painfully slow) and on other days I can't even reach edit mode on the page I want to make an addition to. Is this just happening to me, or has there been a significant change in the number of visitors this website has gotten recently?

For me, it's like I have a 50/50 chance that I'll reach this website; if I do, and click on a series I want to edit, I have about a 50/50 chance that I'll reach that page without getting the 'Oops!' message; next, I have about a 50/50 chance I'll be able to enter 'edit' mode. Etc. Lately I've been adding particular pages to my list of 'favorites' in order to minimize the number of clicks it takes to reach them.

The 'What's New' page is in the same mode as always for me, but it seems that whenever I try to go to the page of a particular anime, that page (if I make it) will be in the strange edit mode--photos are not displayed and the stuff that's usually at the top of the page is at the bottom (and shout has been moved to the lower LEFT).

Yesterday, to my surprise I managed to get into edit mode for Death Parade and paste my review in place. Most surprising of all, the unusual edit mode never showed up and this was all done as usual. I made changes, and got an 'Oops!' message, but I see today that the review was saved. The first time I tried to log on to Mikomi today I couldn't even reach the website at all, but on the third try I made it this far--and typed this Shout.

I still get 'This page cannot be displayed' or 'Oops!' every now and then, but things are working fairly well. If I get one of those messages, I find that immediately trying to log on again always fails, but if I wait a few minutes it should succeed. In general, I can conduct several operations on Mikomi before I get an 'Oops', whereas previously they came so soon that I couldn't get much of anything done.

And yes, this has been a recurring issue since you switched hosting companies.

I didn't even change companies. They just moved the site to new hardware.

I may try moving the site to another machine at some point, but I can't honestly say I'll be looking at it soon. I'm kind of insanely busy right now. (Getting married in a week, plus trying to get a big project out at work.)

Hmm, you know what I can try, is I can try having the hosting company move it to different hardware again. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ It might help!

The website seems to be working much more smoothly nowadays. It used to be a given that it would lock up at some point, but that doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Is there something wrong with the mechanism that new reviewers use to create accounts here at Mikomi? Again, I wonder if a person (addseo1115) tried to create one but was frustrated somehow.

@Stretch: Not so far as I can tell. I can create a new account and login and everything works. I would note that to set a username (as they did) they had to enter an email on the create screen, get the password from email, then login to the site and edit their profile. So I don't think its a technical glitch. This whole flow is a little awkward but it doesn't seem to be broken.

Maybe there just aren't all that many new reviewers nowadays. It seems that Mikomi has gone from a website where lots of people made short comments about anime to one where only two of us do almost all of the reviewing. I hope people aren't thinking 'I must write long, professional quality reviews to be welcome here'.

Oh no doubt, active connections used to be 5-10 times higher most of the time. Natural lifecycle I think. The sites design is... let's say "old fashioned" at best. The software is sometimes a little creeky in how things work and what you can do.

All that combined with no effort to market it to new folks...

All that combined w/ the fact that there are more popular sites out there that offer most of the same features now…

Is it just a coincidence that over the past couple of seasons there have been distinctly few really good anime? Or has the industry gone into a genuine slump? Or am I just imagining things?

I try to keep mine short, mainly for reasons of personal space. The room I keep my collection in is rather small and can't house too much contents all at once. So if something doesn't grab my interest after I get through a title, then I sell or trade it off.

I've got a ton of stuff that Jan-chan set me, but for some reason I have always preferred to watch whatever was currently running in Japan. Also, it's hard to get this stuff to play on my DVD player, and I prefer watching it that way rather than on my computer. Jan-chan kept sending me boxes of stuff and I should have made clear that I couldn't keep up. I regret the way I handled the matter.

Are the numbers for most viewed anime fro human users or just bots? We don't normally get dozens of views a day for a title page nowadays, last I recall.

I still come here to post shorter reviews on titles. But I've been copying over my longer reviews onto a couple other sites. At least for the past few years, me and Stretch have been the only regulars to regularly update pages and add reviews on here.

I guess there was a surge of interest in anime around the year 2000 or so, and it was highly fashionable, but the surge has calmed down today and only those who truly find anime intriguing are still watching and reviewing it.

Also in 2000 a site where you could like, post reviews was novel. These days eh, it's expected. Plus the standard fannish venues these days can accommodate reviews if that's your thing.

THIS site was originally created specifically because I wanted a place where fansubs could be reviewed. Anime-On-DVD was big at the time, but was exclusively focused on US releases. Fansubs were rather harder to come by at the time... filesharing of them hadn't happened yet-- fansubs were still done by VHS tapes or VCDs... or I have some CDs with fansubbed Sailor Moon in Real Movie format. =D

So they were pretty hard to come by and often there was no info about them online. These days, streaming is easy to come by, torrents from places like nyaa.se are also super easy. And descriptions of new shows are up almost before they're aired. The time between Japanese fandom learning something and that reaching English-language fandom is really short these days. All this leads to less immediate need for this kind of site.

And finally, well, when I was first launching the site I was still active in a bunch of anime fandom communities, and I was able to boot strap it by passing word around in them. I haven't been active in any in 10 years now though so even that meager driver disappeared. (I mean, I'm just now getting around to watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) =D)
