Read or Die - TV - 17: Sweet Home

Title:Read or Die - TV
Episode:17: Sweet Home
Synopsis
Yomiko pleads with Wendy to put out the book bonfire (which is making Anita extremely uncomfortable). Wendy says this is necessary for Mr. Joker. "You don't know what Mr. Joker did!" Yomiko replies. Wendy is unmoved, and insists she hasn't been decieved, which makes Yomiko ask "Are you really Wendy?". Wendy demands that The Book of the All-Seeing Eyes* be returned, and spots Nancy holding it. A fight breaks out, Yomiko is wounded, then a smoke bomb goes off and the girls are hustled away by an old friend of Yomiko's--Drake. Friendly bookstore owners offer a van to the group, and they flee from the city. Japan agrees with the US and China to place the Kanda District under "temporary special rule". Numerous major cities have fallen under Joker's control in an attempt to achieve "perfect unification" without using brute force. To do so, "we need to reconstruct people's knowledge and ideas, and books are the key to doing so". At the vacant home of Yomiko's mother, Anita asks Drake if she was the one who burned the British Library down. After dark, an intruder slips into the house in search of the BotASE...

*Let's just call it the BotASE to save my fingers.

One thing that has been increasingly troubling and confusing to me throughout this TV series is that Joker, who was one of the "good guys" in the OVA series, now seems to be one of the villains. Or was it a mistake to generalize the two sides as good and evil back then? Maybe the message this time around is that some organizations are better than others, but only individuals can really be trusted to do what's right. (At one point Drake mentions that he, too, wonders how Yomiko and Joker came to be bitter enemies). Nowadays, might it not be more accurate to say that the internet is the key to reconstructing people's knowledge and ideas? I like the way the OP sequence is updated occasionally--such as the new scene of Yomiko stumbling as she walks down a street with her nose buried in a book.
