Not a genre but actually a demographic. Refers to anime based on manga that was originally serialized in a magazine targeting girls of any age. American fans seem to often be confused and classify any show that has romance and/or major female main characters as shoujo-- this is wrong.
Anime based on manga targeting young women would be called josei. (though very little of the manga targetting young women gets made into anime-- the only ones I can think of are Ebichu and Momoiro Sisters.)

Five years after the events in the .hack video game series, The World invites twin siblings Shugo and Rena to play limited character players. These limited characters turn out to look exactly like Kite and Black Rose, the hero characters from the .hack video games, who were legendary .hackers that solved the riddle at the center of The World and made the game safe to play for everyone. Unfortunately, things start going sour as soon as Shugo and Rena show up; overpowered monsters killing low-level characters and sending their players into comas. Kinomoto Sakura is a bright, cheerful, cute little 4th grade girl. She lives with her 17-year old brother and her widowed father in a nice home in Japan. One day, she hears strange noises coming from the basement of her home. Cautiously investigating the source amongst the rows of book shelves, she discovers it is coming from a glowing old book called "The Clow". Unlocking the book, Sakura discovers that it is in fact a storage box for a deck of odd cards. While attempting to read the English word "Windy" on the front of the top card, she accidently activates the magic card, causing the entire deck to be scattered and disappear all over Japan. The only card that survives is the "Windy" card. |

Saga is a normal school girl living in Europe. She has everything planned down to the smallest details for her daily life and she works very hard (in addition to being very musical). Her friends love her for this and her self-appointed rival Greta does not. Things are fine until one day on the way home, Saga discovers something small, ultra cute, and very hungry -- the apprentice snow fairy named Sugar.
