Not a genre but actually a demographic. Refers to anime based on manga that was originally serialized in a magazine targeting girls of any age. American fans seem to often be confused and classify any show that has romance and/or major female main characters as shoujo-- this is wrong.
Anime based on manga targeting young women would be called josei. (though very little of the manga targetting young women gets made into anime-- the only ones I can think of are Ebichu and Momoiro Sisters.)
Titles that deal in might and magic will fall into this category. Inuyasha and Tenkuu no Escaflowne are a couple of titles which fall into this genre.

Along with that, an ancient legend of a Tennyo (girl from the heavens) is said to have come down to Earth and bathed in a river. A nearby fisherman spotted her and stole her hagoromo (feathered robe) that was hanging on a tree nearby. Without it she could not return to her home in the heavens, and was forced to marry the man and have his children. |

Kinomoto Sakura is a bright, cheerful, cute little 4th grade girl. She lives with her 17-year old brother and her widowed father in a nice home in Japan. One day, she hears strange noises coming from the basement of her home. Cautiously investigating the source amongst the rows of book shelves, she discovers it is coming from a glowing old book called "The Clow". Unlocking the book, Sakura discovers that it is in fact a storage box for a deck of odd cards. While attempting to read the English word "Windy" on the front of the top card, she accidently activates the magic card, causing the entire deck to be scattered and disappear all over Japan. The only card that survives is the "Windy" card. |
