Not a genre but actually a demographic. Refers to anime based on manga that was originally serialized in a magazine targeting girls of any age. American fans seem to often be confused and classify any show that has romance and/or major female main characters as shoujo-- this is wrong.
Anime based on manga targeting young women would be called josei. (though very little of the manga targetting young women gets made into anime-- the only ones I can think of are Ebichu and Momoiro Sisters.)

Saga is a normal school girl living in Europe. She has everything planned down to the smallest details for her daily life and she works very hard (in addition to being very musical). Her friends love her for this and her self-appointed rival Greta does not. Haru Tsuwabuki is a normal student, though not very social. One day he bumps in a student, Sumomo Akihime, and makes her cry. As an apology he ends up joining the gardening club that Sumomo belongs to. Later during his initiation he is given a drink by the advisor, but then he bumps into a strange guy with dog ears, switching his drink with the odd guy's by mistake. Taking a drink turns him into a stuffed animal. The advisor tells him that the only way to return to normal is to find the "Chosen Girl" and let her catch the Seven Stardrops. This girl is Sumomo, who agrees to help him, though she's not allowed to know the stuffed animal's true identity. |
