The city of Lux is caught in a gang war between rival factions. Ichise is a young street fighter forced into the conflict, rising in importance after his crippled body is "texhnolyzed" with advanced implants. He is aided by his sexy doctor, a mysterious psychic girl named Ran, and mafia boss Oonishi. Together they must resolve their destinies and save the city from outside influences with unknown motives. The Class are super-texhnolyzed beings playing god with Lux and its precious resource Lafia - the key to integrating humans and texnolyze. Mysterious travelers from the surface world also have violent plans of their own. Time is running out.

This is a fairly new series (2003) that is very unique and awesome (on my top 5 list). It comes from the same people that made Hellsing and Lain, so the mood is very dark, mysterious, and trippy. The sound effects are brilliant and chilling, and the hollow music fits the eerie ambiance. The characters are shadowy yet believable, and very original. That is the strength of Texhnolyze - it's creativity. If Kubrick made an anime, this would be it. You can't stop watching the next episode because you're dying to learn more about what's going on. The animation and visual design is stunningly bleak and grungy. Camera angles keep you interested and guessing. Scenes range from a sterile, surreal rural town to rusting, damp industrial slums. Nothing is as it seems, and each character has a secret past and personal motives. Unfortunately, you really need to watch the series (22 eps) a few times to catch all the clever subtleties and story details - but it's enjoyable and worth the time.
