Harem: (Story/Location) This is a sub-genre of the "Romantic Comedy" genre. To qualify you have to have a single, dateless, nice guy who suddenly finds himself surrounded by a bunch of hot girls/women who are interested or attracted to him to varying degrees. The male lead may also live with many of these girls.
Modern: (Setting) These are titles which have a modern feel to them; the story takes place in the present day (of the creation of this anime), give or take a few years.
Depression: (Story/Location) Titles that contain characters who suffer from depression would fall into this category if this is of significant importance for the storyline.
Dating Sim Spinoff: (Type subgenre) Usually an anime starts out its life as a manga but a Dating Sim can also become an anime. Dating sims follow a set choice or path and feature Bad, Good, and True Endings. Most of the Dating Sims though are ↗ero-based an usually involve the main character trying to 'date' each of the girls in the game; the anime usually picks one of the harem of girls available and plays her 'true ending' out. Other dating sims are not usually Ero in nature but still follow the other rules. Note that even an anime based on an Ero game may not contain any erotic scenes in many cases. Watch | One morning, Wataru Hoshino found a sleeping girl - in nothing but her underwear - in his room. When she woke up, she quickly escaped by jumping out of the window, but not without punching Wataru in the face first. This girl, Rinna Sawaki, ends up being a transfer student of Wataru's school, as well as the new roommate of Wataru's dormitory. He lives with four other girls and their school teacher, but due to Temizugawa Heavy Industry's cancellation of their aviation branch, South Sakojima Island's major company, the families involved with the corporation have to be evacuated in one year. As a result of this, the four girls have to leave the island in one year's time. Knowing this, Rinna refuses to become friends with Wataru and the other girls, because of the pain that she might experience as a result of their eventual separation. Itou Makoto, a shy and unconfident teenager, has become very accepting at only stealing glances at a cute girl as they ride the same trolley each morning on their way to their high school - at least until Saionji Sekai, sitting next to him in the classroom, surprises him and chances to get a peek at a photo-snap of the beautiful Katsura Kotonoha on his cell-phone. To Makoto's surprise, Sekai offers to support him in his romance - and due to her commitment the three soon become close friends. Close enough that Makoto braves asking Katsura out on date. And she agrees. Later that day, Makoto finds a quiet moment to express his thanks for all support that Sekai has offered him, and makes clear his intent on finding away to reply her kindness. But he is totally unprepared and very surprised at the reward that Sekai has chosen: Sekai steals a long kiss from his lips, ended only by her breaking away to run for a commuter-tolley. Before Sekai boards the train, she turns and wishes Makoto well on his date. |
