Kanji Sasahara is a first year college student. He watches a lot of Anime and reads Manga. He was thinking of joining the Manga club when another student Makoto Kohsaka strikes up a conversation with them about joining. Kanji is embarassed and leaves. Later he visits the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (Aka a bunch of Otaku's). While alone in the club room, he looks up the skirt of a Haruka doll (KGNE), and is caught red handed flipping through their porn collection. He is so mortified, but finds out it was a form of Hazing and the other guys were just waiting nearby for the president to catch him in the 'act'!. "Now that we know we're the same kind" Genshiken member Madarame says, "how about you join us?"

Koushiro has lost his way in life. His steady girlfriend broke up with him because their relationship was not going anywhere and she tell him that she has fallen out of love with him, and his job at a dating service was not bringing him any measure of happiness. During his commute home, he sees a high school student on the train, and feels a strange spark of connection. The next day they happen to meet again, he approaches her and asks to spend some time together. In an amusement park, they spend some time and talk, where Koushiro finds himself opening up to her, shedding tears at the memories of his broken heart, and where he finds himself being comforted by her.

Mayuko Chigasaki is a young woman struggling to make it in life. Early every morning, she delivers newspapers in her small town of Enohana. She attends a cram school in Tokyo by day, taking the bus and the train to get there. After school, she works at a local small eating establishment where she is the delivery girl. In the evenings, she works at the local (old) bath house in exchange for living in a small room above the facility. So in addition to school, she has three part-time jobs.
