Mikan is a simple outgoing middle school girl, who has befriended the very quiet and intelligent Hotaru, but together they make quite a pair. The terminally happy Mikan and the super genius Hotaru were always hanging out together, and then suddenly Hotaru left. After six months of no letters, no phone calls and only one postcard, Mikan gets so concerned that she chases her friend down and finds her at Alice Gakuen (Alice Academy), a special school for kids with special abilities. A teacher invites Mikan to attend, but on a probationary basis. Mikan is happy that she gets to attend classes with Hotaru again, but finds herself in a class with other students who all have “alices” or special abilities. Once there, she learns that both club members (and childhood friends) shrine maiden Akabane Kureha and sword fighter Renji Hiiragi-senpai (the latter being nicknamed "falling man"), are in fact powerful "Night Wizards". They work for an organization led by a girl named Anzelotto to protect the world against the Demon Lords' dark tribe, the Emulators (who are totally unaffected by human science). The strange bracelet Elis has owned since her childhood turns out to be the potential holder of seven magical gems and is said to enable its owner to open a gate to the demon world.
