Cyberpunk/Mecha/Dark Titles

A sub-genre of science fiction dealing with future urban societies dominated by computer technology. Baburugamu Kuraishisu, Serial Experiments Lain and Koukaku Kidoutai are good examples.

This is a genre of anime which features mechanical fighting machines. Often these take the form of giant robots but this isn't the only form mecha can take. There are tons of examples of mecha titles considering the popularity of the series. Blue Gender, Shin Seiki Evangelion, Tenkuu no Escaflowne, and Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 are all classic mecha titles.

Titles that are dismal or gloomy in nature qualify for the dark category.

BALDR FORCE EXE Resolution
In a future networked world, the option of existing in the virtual network world rivals the real world (or wired reality). The hacker group known as SteppenWolf have decided on one final hack-attack before disbanding and have set their sights on attacking FLAK, the UN Cyber Security Bureau’s servers. And everything went very wrong. Their leader, Nonomura Yuuya was killed in the cyberworld, and while the remaining three hackers succeed in jacking-out, they returned only to be arrested by the army. One of the STEPPENWOLF team, Soma Toru finds himself forcibly recruited into FLAK as an anti-hacking 'diver'. While working for the ‘otherside’, Toru still harbors strong resentments at those who killed Yuuya. But the ongoing battle and competing agendas between FLAK, the VSS security enterprise and the FEI DAO terrorist group appear to be converging on a single point in cyberspace.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death and Rebirth
Watch Originally a collection of clips from the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, Death was created as a precursor to the re-worked ending of the series. Rebirth was intended as that reworked ending but after production overruns became only the first half of the first episode of The End of Evangelion, with some minor differences. Over time, two newer director`s cuts of Death were produced, each including new footage not seen in the series - these were called Death (True) and finally Death (True)^2. Note that despite containing clips from the series, Death (True)^2 & Rebirth should be seen after the series itself to be fully understood.
