Godai is a 1st-year rounin (person who fails his college entrance exams) who lives in the old, run-down small apartment building called Ikkoku-kan. He's desperate to make it in this year. Unfortunately, the other residence of Ikkoku-kan are having too much fun at Godai's expense. There's his neighbor Akemi-san who works at a local bar, loves to party, and loves to prance around in a sheer negligee, especially in Godai-kun's room. There's his other neighbor, the mysterious Yotsuya-san, who often works with Akemi-san to distract Godai. He often enters Godai's room by making a large hole in the wall between their rooms. Rounding out the tenants are Ichinose-san and her young son Kentaro-kun. Inchinose-san loves to party as well and she's also known for being a busybody.

Saotome Ranma is a boy with a problem. He is cursed so that whenever cold water hits him, he turns into a young red haired girl. Further complicating maters is that his father Genma has arranged for Ranma to marry one of the daughters of Tendou Souun, his former training companion. Of the daughters Kasumi (the sweet one and homemaker), Nabiki (the scheming one), and Akane (the violent one), Akane is chosen to be Ranma's bride.

Ataru Moroboshi, the world's most lecherous, unlucky, and unfaithful teenager, is randomly selected by invading aliens to defend Earth in a one-on-one action against their champion. The alien warlord's daughter, Lum-chan, is Ataru's opponent and he has 10-days to just grab her horns. Ataru's girlfriend, Shinobu, promises to marry Ataru if he wins. When Ataru finally does win, he happily states that now he can get married. Lum interprets this as Ataru proposing to her, so she accepts. Now he is engaged Lum and she won't tolerate any cheating. Shinobu isn't happy about the situation either. And to make matters worse, Ataru's male classmates are all in love with Lum-chan. What's a guy to do?
