This is a genre of anime which features mechanical fighting machines. Often these take the form of giant robots but this isn't the only form mecha can take. There are tons of examples of mecha titles considering the popularity of the series. Blue Gender, Shin Seiki Evangelion, Tenkuu no Escaflowne, and Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 are all classic mecha titles.

In a near future year, acting in concordance with a General Public Order, the carrying of firearms has been permitted to a restricted and select elite. Major parts of Tokyo have been designated as unrestricted free fire zones. And those that live within these zones suffer a life of oppression and a constant threat of violence. But a movement is underfoot to rebel against the syndicate that controls the city through terror and destruction. Four girls, who at a glance might appear to be adolescent teenagers, show their skills and determination against anyone who might interfere with their work.

It doesn't look like this is going to be a great day for Matsutani Shuzo, nickname "Shu". The schoolboy has just lost a kendo fight in his dojo, and the girl he intended to impress walked away with his victorious opponent who even gave him a lecture after their fight. Depressed he retreats to the industry sector of his hometown, climbing up an old factory chimney, the "tower of courage" for his gang. To his surprise he meets a strange girl with blue hair and blue eyes up there... but then time stops for a moment - and shortly after this, he and the girl are attacked by huge mechas. Moments later he finds himself in a place he's never seen before, and his nightmare begins in a fortress named Hellywood where all values of humanity appear to be lost. And yet, Shu tries to plead for his ideals...
