Yukio (also known as Koyuki) is somewhat of a fourteen-year-old loser. He's not very popular, athletic or musically talented. In fact he is so lame that his favorite musician is a canned-mainstream-teen-idol singer. But when he gets reconnected with his childhood friend, Izumi, and meets up with the hip Ryusuke, a musician with connections to the very popular American Band, Dying Breed, his life gets turned around. In learning about rock-n-roll music, he quickly aspires to learn the guitar and gain a spot in Ryusuke's new band - Beck.

Shiratori Ryuji wants to become a picture book writer, and he moves to an apartment, Narutaki-So, in order to go to an art school in Tokyo. Narutaki-so is an old Japanese style one-story house which doesn’t fit in urban scenery. It is owned by the cousin of his mother, and the manager of the apartment is Aoba Kozue. She is his second cousin, and they met with each other when they were children although he doesn’t remember her much. She is in the second year of a high school attached to Aoba Junior Collage.

Tokiha Mai and her frail younger brother Takumi receive a scholarship on the prestigious Fuuka Gakuen. On the ferry to the school, they find a girl floating in the water, holding a huge black sword. After rescuing her, the boat is attacked by another girl with a dog/artillery mecha thing. She warns Mai not to go to the school and to hand over the girl they found. After a big fight (sinking the ferry) Mai, the girl and her sword suddenly appear at Fuuka academy. It might have something to do with the red birth mark both girls seem to have. Is Mai a HiME? (HiME stands for "Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment")
