He actually had the chance to join the top teams, but he refused the offer and instead stayed with the Kakegawa as offensive player. Kubo had charisma, and due to that, he was able to supervise the Kakegawa`s training and efforts; the team became much better.

Yusuke Urameshi is a punk high school student who loves fighting fellow students, especially rival Kazuma Kuwabara and his gang of thugs. One day while cutting class, a little girl walks in front of a car and Yusuke pushed the child out of the way but in the process, dies. Since his final act was one of selflessness, the ruler of the Spirit World, Koenma-sama, decides that he deserves another chance. He decrees that Yusuke will now be a Spirit Detective and his guide will be Botan, who's normal job is to lead people to the afterlife.
